Each month, the Allegan County Health Department inspects restaurants, schools and other facilities for unsafe food practices.
Allegan County reports were previously available through Sword Solutions — but officials confirmed the municipality has started the process of switching to new software. The reports for January, February and March were shared with The Sentinel in response to a request under FOIA.
The Sentinel is sharing “priority” violation reports from Holland, Hamilton, Saugatuck, Douglas and Fennville — those that could “directly lead to contamination of food or increase the risk of transmitting a foodborne illness” — as well as corrective measures taken.
The Sentinel will also report on “priority foundation” violations — ones that could lead to a priority violation. The health department notes “core” violations, but The Sentinel will only report on those if there’s a significant accumulation in a single eatery or if that eatery also has more serious violations.
