“Deputies immediately rendered aid along with jail medical staff,” the agency said in a written statement.

Paramedics were also summoned to attempt to resuscitate Mays, but they were not successful.

“Mays was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the statement said. His body “did not have obvious signs of trauma.”

His cause and manner of death will be determined through an autopsy, officials said.

Mays was arrested on Tuesday, March 24, on suspicion of violating probation related to a previous conviction for assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, San Bernardino County Superior Court and jail records show. He was transerred to the West Valley Detention Center on Tuesday, April 14.

He was being held without bail pending a probation revocation hearing, which had been scheduled for Friday, April 24.
