The Pewaukee School District closed April 14 due to a campuswide power outage, following overnight storms that blew across the state.
The district previously told families schools would operate on a two-hour delay. But school officials later decided to cancel classes “based on the information we have from WE Energies and unclear timelines for power restoration,” the district said on Facebook.
There will be no virtual learning. The district said it will decide later in the day whether to host after-school activities.
“At this time, phone service is unavailable for both incoming and outgoing calls,” the district said. “Please use email to communicate with your school buildings.”
The closure comes after the National Weather Service in Milwaukee-Sullivan issued tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings in Milwaukee, Washington and Ozaukee counties on April 14. Those warnings expired at 2:15 a.m.
One tornado touched down in Gilman, Wisconsin, a village about 50 miles north of Eau Claire, the National Weather Service confirmed Tuesday.
As of Tuesday morning, more than 60,000 Wisconsin utility customers were without power after the storms.
