MASSILLON − What began as a weekend cheesecake side hustle is becoming a full-time dream for David and Caroll Battle.
On April 17, David Battle will step away from his engineering career to devote himself entirely to Cheesecakes by Battle, the couple’s fast-growing dessert business at 954 Lincoln Way W in Massillon.
“For the immediate future, Caroll and I will be operating on our same weekend schedule,” he said in a recent phone call. “But moving forward, the hope is to expand to three or four days per week, giving our customers the opportunity to purchase during the week, as well.”
The couple recently launched a wholesale portal, allowing restaurants to order and serve their cheesecake slices. Currently, Kozmo’s Grille and Poagie’s BBQ feature the Massillon-made desserts.
Another new offering gaining popularity is the cheesecake builder at The Battle Brand, which allows customers to create custom orders online with options to mix flavors, crusts and toppings into a fully personalized dessert.
“For those wanting to be a cheesecake master, the website lets you get creative and make your cheesecake dreams come true, all without doing the work yourself,” Battle said.
Core cheesecake flavors remain available, along with branded merchandise for devoted fans of the bakery.
Recent weekend favorites have included key lime crumble, lemon meringue and strawberry shortcake.
For the Battles, inspiration comes from a mix of seasons, customer suggestions and, as Battle puts it, “whatever we feel like baking.”
