Purdue men’s basketball has been one of the most consistent winner over the past decade.
But the Boilermakers are still seeking a breakthrough in winning a national championship. They looked like a contender entering this NCAA Tournament, and once were the No. 1 team in the country mid-season.
Purdue started the season 17-1, with impressive wins at Alabama, over Texas Tech (with JT Toppin), and Auburn. The lone blemish was a home blowout loss to Iowa State, which became a theme as Illinois and Michigan won in that fashion, and Michigan State and Wisconsin won tight games at Mackey, too. That was part of a 6-7 finish to the regular-season before Purdue turned to championship form, avenging a loss to Michigan, to clinch the Big Ten Tournament title.
The Boilermakers made it to the Final Four two seasons ago, when they lost to Connecticut in the national championship game. Here’s a look at Purdue’s history:

Has Purdue men’s basketball won March Madness? Purdue basketball NCAA Tournament history
Purdue has not won a tournament national championship in men’s basketball. It has made three Final Fours, finishing as national runner-up in 1969 and 2024, and winning the third-place game in 1980.
It was awarded by Helms a national championship in 1932, when the Boilers went 17-1 and were led by All-American John Wooden.
Has Purdue won a national championship in other sports?
Purdue has won team national championships in men’s golf (1961), women’s basketball (1999), women’s golf (2010) and cheerleading (2018). It also has 32 individual national championships.
