Florida Highway Patrol.

When did the crash happen?

Shortly after 7:30 p.m.

What happened?

According to FHP, a Jeep Wrangler was traveling south on State Road 200 while a Chevy Spark was traveling north in the opposite direction. A Subaru Outlander was traveling behind the Chevy. Troopers said the Jeep entered the Chevy’s lane, causing a head‑on collision. After the impact, the Chevy continued northeast and overturned onto the east grassy shoulder of SR 200. The Jeep rotated into oncoming traffic, and its left side struck the front of the Subaru. Both the Jeep and the Subaru came to rest in the roadway, blocking traffic on SR 200.

All occupants from the three vehicles were transported to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, where the driver of the Jeep later died from his injuries.

Authorities identified the Jeep’s driver as 76‑year‑old John Robert Dalton of Inverness. Officials said Dalton was heading home at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Chevy, a 37‑year‑old woman from Inverness, and the driver of the Subaru, an 85‑year‑old man from O’Fallon, Missouri, suffered minor injuries, troopers said.

Troopers blocked both lanes of the roadway while they investigated the crash.

As of March 12, FHP records show 13 traffic‑related deaths in Marion County. The total does not include fatalities from the cities of Dunnellon, Belleview or Ocala. At this time last year, the county total was 11. Troopers said 73 people died in traffic‑related crashes in 2025.
