Former Colts' kicker signs with new team early in free agency

A former Indianapolis Colts kicker has found a new opportunity.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Las Vegas Raiders are signing Matt Gay.

The Colts signed Gay during the 2023 offseason. At that time, that deal made Gay the highest-paid free agent kicker in NFL history. However, last April, two years into that contract, Gay was released.

In his two seasons with the Colts, Gay has been steady on attempts from under 50 yards, which includes missing only three tries.

However, from over 50 yards, he has struggled mightily. During that same two-year span, Gay is a combined 11-for-22 on such kicks, according to PFF.

Gay then spent time last season with both Washington and San Francisco. In total, he made 17-of-23 field goals, and he was 26-for-26 on extra points.

The Colts just re-signed kicker Blake Grupe after he stabilized the kicking game late last season. Presumably, Grupe will compete with Spencer Shrader for the Colts’ kick job this season.
