Iowa women's basketball vs. recap. Hawkeyes rally in OT after collapse

Despite blowing a massive lead toward the end of regulation, No. 10 Iowa women’s basketball rallied in overtime for am 85-78 win over No. 13 Maryland inside XFINITY Center.

Iowa (17-2, 8-0 Big Ten Conference) looked to be cruising to the finish line, up 17 with 3:15 left. But Maryland (17-4, 5-4) came charging back with the help of several late Hawkeyes turnovers, eventually tying things on a late Oluchi Okananwa trey with two seconds left. Iowa had to regroup in a hurry.

The Hawkeyes leaned on their defense in the extra period, holding Maryland to just three points over the final four minutes. Iowa eventually closed things out at the line.

Ava Heiden poured in a team-high 20 points and got double-digit assistance from Chit-Chat Wright (18 points), Hannah Stuelke (12), Taylor McCabe (12) and Journey Houston (10). Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu led Maryland with 18 points.

FINAL: Iowa 85, Maryland 78.

Hawkeyes close it out at the line to avoid a massive face plant. Iowa ended overtime on a 11-2 run with nine free throws.

Maryland’s leading scorer has just five points on 1-for-7 shooting with four fouls. Iowa still needs a good close, up 68-59 with 1:35 left.

A brief “Let’s go Hawks!” chant breaks out as Iowa looks to finish this off. Taylor McCabe drains a fourth trey to join Ava Heiden, Hannah Stuelke and Journey Houston in double figures.

Yarden Garzon has fouled out. Both teams in the bonus the rest of the way. Ava Heiden checks back in after a long sit with four fouls.

Hawkeyes still firmly in control, but Maryland will be in the bonus for the rest of the quarter. Could be significant with the Terps shooting just 32%.

Some big minutes from freshman Journey Houston, who’s up to 10 points after going on a personal 10-0 run with Ava Heiden in foul trouble. Hannah Stuelke up to another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Hawkeyes trending the right way with winning time approaching.

Maryland doesn’t have a field goal over the last 5:58. Journey Houston with a big putback to end the quarter. Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu is back in the game, though Ava Heiden is on the bench with four fouls.

Not much separation here in the third quarter. Hawkeyes still shooting 44% but are getting beat on the boards. Maryland with a 30-19 rebounding edge as Iowa looks for some room to breathe.

Jan Jensen calls time with Maryland on a 7-0 surge. Terps forcing Ava Heiden to take several extended jumpers, which have been hit and miss.

Chit-Chat Wright opens with another trey. Hawkeyes trying to put the foot down early in the second half.

HALF: Iowa 33, Maryland 27.

Strong half for the Hawkeyes. Iowa shooting 41% from the field and 50% from deep through 20 minutes. Ava Heiden leads with 10 points on 5-for-9 shooting. Maryland hasn’t fully gotten to ramp up the press with Iowa in control.

Hawkeyes defense has been on point. Maryland is 0-for-7 from deep and 8-for-26 overall. Iowa with a 27-20 lead.

Hawkeyes are 5-for-9 from deep to fuel this hot start. Three from Taylor McCabe and two from Chit-Chat Wright.

8:42/2Q: Iowa handling Maryland’s press just fine so far.

Only one turnover for Iowa so far while draining three treys out of press breaks. Hawkeyes clinging to a 19-16 advantage. Taylor Stremlow into the game with Journey Houston.

That first quarter went better than many have for Iowa in College Park. Offensive droughts on both sides to end the quarter. Teams have combined to miss 15 of the last 17 shots.

Terps are 2:15 without a point as Iowa rips off a 9-0 surge. Four of the five starters have scored.

And she’s on the board to give Iowa a 12-10 lead. Ava Heiden has four early points as well.
