East Canton spring cleanup

EAST CANTON – A free spring cleanup will be May 16 for existing Kimble customers. Trash should be bundled, boxed or bagged and set at curbside by 6 a.m. Brush must be bundled and cut into four-foot lengths. All items must weigh less than 50 pounds.

Furniture and appliances (except freezers, refrigerators, dehumidifiers and air conditioners) will be accepted. To see a list of unacceptable items, visit https://villageeastcanton.net.

Canton Senior Expo

CANTON ‒ The 36th annual Canton Senior Expo will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 6 at the Cultural Center for the Arts, 1001 Market Ave. N. Admission, parking and activities are free.

Local vendors will share information on health and wellness, retirement, recreational activities, housing options, insurance, home improvement and senior organizations. There will be information sessions, entertainment, refreshments and the chance to win prizes.

Learn about first ladies as mothers

CANTON ‒ The National First Ladies Library and Museum will offer the virtual program “Legacy Lecture: First Mothers – Celebrating First Ladies as Mothers in the White House” from noon to 1 p.m. May 8.

Explore the lives of America’s first ladies as mothers, featuring history and storytelling via Zoom. Attendees will also enjoy aSpecial Mother’s Day Virtual Tea, featuring recipe cards sent in advance and a festive virtual hat contest. For tickets and more information, visit firstladies.org.

Learn about birds

CANTON – The McKinley Presidential Museum and Library, 800 McKinley Monument Drive NW, will host “Beautiful Birds” for the Science Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 9. Science Saturdays are free with museum admission.

Visitors will learn how Ohio’s birds impact our environment. There will be hands-on crafts and activities for all ages. All moms will receive free admission to the museum May 9 and 10 for Mother’s Day weekend.

Veteran Appreciation Breakfast

GREEN – The Stark County Honor Court Program will celebrate its 15th annual Veteran Appreciation Breakfast beginning at 9 a.m. May 22 at MAPS Air Museum, 2260 International Parkway.

All veterans and the public are invited to the event that will honor program volunteer mentors and say farewell to its founder, Judge Taryn L. Heath, who has presided over the specialized docket since its inception in 2011.

Nashville recording artist Ricky Lee and Warrior Beat, a nonprofit veteran-owned drum therapy program, will perform. The Rev. John Schluep of Warrior’s Journey Home will give the invocation. American Legion Post 44 will present the colors. Melanie John will perform the national anthem.

Tickets are $16 per person, and an RSVP is required by May 20. Southern gospel group to perform

History discussion group to meet

MASSILLON ‒ The topic for the history discussion group at the Massillon Museum, 121 Lincoln Way E, from 10 a.m. to noon May 5 will be “Hot Rods, Motorcycles and The Soap Box Derby.”

The “Massillon Remembers” group meets on the first Tuesday of every month to chat casually about a pre-announced topic, usually a narrow segment of Massillon history. Chris Craft moderates the discussion. The group is free and open to everyone; new participants are welcome at any time. No reservations are required. Coffee and doughnuts are available for a donation.

Donate blood

NORTH CANTON ‒ The North Canton Public Library, 185 N. Main St., will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 8. Registration is required. Visit https://tinyurl.com/yc5b598u. Give blood that day and get a $20 gift card, thanks to Amazon.

Shred and e-cycle event

PERRY TWP. – The Better Business Bureau will have a community shred and e-cycle event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 9 in the Central Catholic High School parking lot, 4824 Tuscarawas St. W.

There is no limit to how much recyclable material one entity can bring; however, anyone planning to bring 10 or more boxes should call the BBB at least 30 minutes before arriving at the event. E-cycling services are for anything that plugs in or runs on a battery.

The event is free, except for fees for some electronics; all items containing freon carry a $10 charge, fluorescent lighting is 25 cents a foot, CFLs are 50 cents each, monitors (CRT style) are $10 each, flat screens are $5 each, dorm/wine refrigerators are $10 each, TVs (all types/sizes) are $20 each and window air conditioning units are $10 each. Wilmot Fire and Rescue benefit ham dinner

WILMOT – The Wilmot Fire Department, 204 Mill St., will have a curbside carryout ham dinner from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. May 10. Drive-thru pickup will be in the front of the fire station with volunteers bringing meals to your vehicle.

Dinners are $12 each and include ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, applesauce, coleslaw and dinner roll and cookie. Delivery within the village is available, call 330-359-5995. Bring correct change, if possible. All proceeds benefit Wilmot Fire and Rescue, a volunteer department.

North Canton National Guard soldier receives new rank

New York Army National Guard member Daleisy Murphy from North Canton, assigned to Echo Company, 427th Brigade Support Battalion, received a promotion March 24 to the rank of first lieutenant. Army National Guard promotions are based on a soldier’s overall performance, demonstrated leadership abilities, professionalism and future development potential, according to a news release.
