President Donald Trump arrive at Palm Beach International Airport on Friday, Jan. 16 for his fifth consecutive weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach.
The president attended a ceremony at Mar-a-Lago regarding the renaming of a 4-mile stretch of Southern Boulevard for him. The road connects the airport in unincorporated West Palm Beach and Mar-a-Lago.
Many local and state officials attended the ceremony including Palm Beach County Mayor Sara Baxter, state Rep. Meg Weinberger, R-Palm Beach Gardens, Executive Director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and former county commissioner Dave Kerner, County Commissioner Maria Sachs, Chief Deputy County Administrator Todd Bonlarron and right-wing provocateur Laura Loomer.
“I grew up to respect those that serve and I feel like President Trump has certainly done so much for our community. I think at the end of the day, President Trump is a two-term president and it’s the right thing to do,” said Weinberger, who filed the original bill to rename the road in the state Legislature.
The president will meet with the prime minister of the Slovak Republic on Saturday, Jan. 17, according to his press schedule.
While the president doesn’t have anything on his schedule Sunday, he will attend the college football national championship game between the University of Miami and Indiana University on Jan. 19, the Martin Luther King Day holiday, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. The president’s granddaughter, Kai Trump of Jupiter, will enroll at Miami as a freshman this year.
The visit will be Trump’s 18th since beginning his second term in office a year ago next week.
Street signs will be marked ‘President Donald J. Trump Boulevard’
West Palm Beach city commissioners in early December gave the final OK to the proposal to name a 4-mile stretch of Southern Boulevard “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard.”
West Palm Beach was the last local government that needed to approve the signage. State lawmakers, county commissioners and Palm Beach town leaders had already signed off.
But even though some West Palm residents objected to the renaming, commissioners said it was important to approve the markers to maintain a good working relationship with state and federal agencies.
“There are consequences, and it sends a message if we vote against this that we may not be good partners,” Commissioner Joe Peduzzi said Jan. 8, adding, “I think in this case we’re better off being followers.”
