Three unoccupied homes were destroyed on Sunday, Dec. 21, near Glen Arbor in a fire that was driven by high winds, fire officials said.
No one was injured the blaze that took more than 40 firefighters from 12 different agencies to extinguish, according to Glen Lake Fire Department Lt. Nate Perdue.
Officials were called for a fire that set three residential homes ablaze in Glen Arbor on Sunday, Dec. 21, amid 30 mph winds and frigid temperatures.
According to the National Weather Service, winds were 45 mph with gusts up to 59 mph in Traverse City on Sunday.
Firefighters were dispatched to the 6700 block of South Dunns Farm Road at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday in response to a structure fire.
“The 911 caller, calling from across Big Glen lake, reported a large, orange glow coming from the area,” the Glen Lake Fire Department said in a release.
When firefighters arrived, they found three large homes on fire.
“The primary structure was fully involved and fire had extended into the adjacent homes,” the release said. “Frigid temperatures and wind gusts upwards of 30 mph at the time of the fire provided a significant challenge to first arriving crews.”
Firefighting efforts continued until 12:30 p.m. when all fires were deemed out, the release said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Firefighters from Almira Township Fire & EMS Department, Cedar Area Fire & Rescue, Elmwood Fire Department, Inland Fire, Grand Traverse Metro Emergency Services Authority, Leland Township Fire and Rescue, Traverse City Fire, Grand Traverse Band Fire/Rescue, Benzie EMS , Green Lake Fire, Long Lake Fire and Blair Fire, and the Red Cross took part in the effort.
Glen Arbor is approximately 27 miles from Traverse City, north of Empire, near Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore.
