Michigan football had been on a torrid pace on the recruiting trail, even elevating to the top Big Ten spot at No. 6 overall in the 247Sports Composite team rankings. However, all good things come to an end, it seems.
Though the Wolverines had been adding and adding and adding to the class, the maize and blue hadn’t seen any subtractions since safety Darrell Mattison flipped to Ole Miss. Ironically, the safety who had committed just a day later, also left the class, it just took an extra month to do so — and he’s chosen another Big Ten team.
When it came to the 2027 class, Las Vegas (Nev.) Centennial three-star safety Maxwell Miles was near the bottom of the rankings, only having one below him (in-state athlete Lundon Hampton). However, he was prioritized by the Kyle Whittingham staff after arriving, but now he’s chosen to play for PJ Fleck, having flipped to Minnesota.
Here is the class now as it stands:
Having dropped down to 15 commitments in the 2027 class, the Wolverines remain ahead of Ohio State in the 247Sports Composite team rankings, but have now fallen behind USC and UCLA. Minnesota, by virtue of the add, moved up to 15th, but the Gophers have near a full class with 25 commits.
The last time Michigan lost a safety, in Mattison, they added an even more highly-ranked player in his stead, with Chicago (Ill.) Mount Carmel four-star safety Tavares Harrington taking his place in the class. We’ll see if that short-term history repeats itself.
