Manitowoc council to vote on newest conditional use permit for warming shelter Sept. 15

MANITOWOC – Manitowoc Common Council is set to vote on whether to accept the newest conditional use permit for the Manitowoc Warming Shelter during its meeting Sept. 15.

The matter was discussed during the Plan Commission’s meeting Sept. 9. Some of the conditions for the new CUP keep the number of people who can use the shelter to 12 people per night and impose a limit on the number of nights an individual can use the shelter.

In a Facebook post on the Manitowoc Warming Shelter page, Kenneth Walters wrote that the warming shelter’s steering committee decided to accept the conditions so they can operate in the fast-approaching winter season.

Walters wrote: “We have a lot of work ahead of us to fulfill our dreams of building a permanent shelter to help our neighbors. The city of Manitowoc has been, and continues to be, a powerful ally helping us help others.”

The Manitowoc Warming Shelter is preparing for its fourth season in operation, but its first at a new location, 702 State St., Manitowoc, used by Lakeshore CAP.

The Warming Shelter typically operates November through April and is intended as a low-barrier emergency shelter to keep people from spending the night outside during the coldest months of the year.

The city council will hold a public hearing on the shelter’s conditional use permit and vote on its acceptance at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at City Hall. People can also watch the meeting remotely through the city’s website, manitowoc.org.
