Jaguars' Jourdan Lewis weighs in on Travis Hunter playing wide receiver and cornerback

During the Jacksonville Jaguars team scrimmage last Friday, we got our first look at Travis Hunter playing both wide receiver and cornerback.

Since then, that practice schedule has been more of the norm with Hunter switching back and forth between offense and defense during the Tuesday and Wednesday practices.

“His willingness to go do it. He wants to prove people wrong,” said Jourdan Lewis. “That’s the type of mindset you have to have to go and be the ultimate competitor out here. Of course, he has all the skill sets, but I think it’s the mental aspect of it that makes him different.”

The majority of Hunter’s practice time has still come at wide receiver up to this point. As Liam Coen has described previously, the team felt that the wideout position was where more refinement was needed.

But overall, Hunter’s snap count totals during the 11-on-11 periods of practice have been relatively equal up to this point.

“He going to show you,” Lewis said of Hunter. “He going to try to do it at 10 fold and he going to make sure he put his best foot forward doing both things and whatever they ask him to do he wants to do it at full speed. Like I said, his mental fortitude for it is unmatched.”

There, of course, is still work to be done to get Hunter ready for the regular season, but whether he’s at receiver or cornerback, his ball skills and ability to operate in space are frequently on display.

The Jaguars have built out a very detailed schedule for Hunter with no wasted moments. One example of this is if Hunter is on offense for the day, during the special teams periods, he then goes and works with the defensive coaches.

Hunter, along with the rest of the starters, will play in the preseason opener against Pittsburgh, and Hunter will see action on both sides of the ball.

“I feel like that’s something he hangs his hat on,” Lewis said of those who doubt Hunter being able to play both ways. “There’s a lot of naysayers out there for him, but he comes out here and performs every single day.”
