Corpus Christi police find body of man, 63, who was kayaking; foul play not suspected

Corpus Christi police said foul play is not suspected in the death of a 63-year-old man whose body was found near U.S. 181 on Aug. 6.

Police officers were dispatched to 5100 Hull Drive regarding a call of a missing person at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 6, according to a news release issued by the Corpus Christi Police Department. They were told the man went kayaking around 6 p.m. the previous day and had not returned.

Multiple agencies assisted with the search due to the low water levels in the area.

The U.S. Coast Guard located a kayak, but it was later determined that it was unrelated, the news release said.

The Corpus Christi Police Department Drone Unit found a second kayak on the west side of U.S. 181, officer Madeline Vaughn said in an email to the Caller-Times.

Around noon, the Corpus Christi Fire Department found a body in the same area.

The police department’s Search and Recovery Dive Team was dispatched to recover the body.

The man was identified as Rodney Wood by the Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is handling an investigation into the death.
