Packers LG Aaron Banks considered 'day to day' after suffering back injury at practice

Green Bay Packers left guard Aaron Banks left Thursday’s practice with a back injury and is considered day to day, according to coach Matt LaFleur.

“He had a little back issue. Everything checked out alright, I would say it’s going to be very day to day,” LaFleur said Friday.

Banks dipped out of practice midway through on Thursday and did not return.

The Packers signed Banks to a four-year, $77 million deal, including a $27 million signing bonus, in free agency. He was the team’s most expensive addition of the offseason, and the Packers are expecting him to be a plus starter at left guard along the offensive line.

Of the things that actually matter during training camp, injuries to key players rank near the top. It sounds like Banks avoided a major injury, but he’ll still miss practice time during camp, and back injuries can linger for players who line up along the line of scrimmage.

The Packers are already without expected starting center Elgton Jenkins, who is moving from left guard to center but is dealing with a back injury to start training camp. Without Jenkins, the Packers have used a combination of Sean Rhyan and Jacob Monk at center, with 2024 first-round pick Jordan Morgan at right guard. Travis Glover also got time with the first-team at guard after Banks left Thursday’s practice.

Injuries to Jenkins and Banks to open training camp may hurt the offensive line’s ability to build cohesion before the start of the regular season, although Week 1 is still over 40 days away.
