Teen struck, killed by train in Churchville identified

Monroe County sheriff’s deputes have identified the teen who was struck and killed by a train in Churchville early on July 15.

Vasil Melnik, 16, Chili was struck by an Amtrak train around 12:15 a.m. on July 15, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Amy Young. He was declared dead at the scene, near South Main and Carroll streets within the village.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” Young said.

Deputies continue to investigate the fatal encounter.

Who was Vasil Melnik?

According to his obituary, “Vasil was known for his kindness, laughter and the strength he showed in every situation. His vibrant spirit and infectious joy touched the lives of everyone around him, and he will be deeply missed by his family and friends”

A relative launched an online fundraiser to help with funeral costs. It described the teen’s death as “devastating” and “unexpected.”

“He was a cherished son, grandson, nephew and cousin, whose kindness, laughter, and strength touched the lives of everyone who knew him,” the gofundme read. More than $14,000 was donated to support the Melnik family in less than a day.
