The Los Angeles Rams don’t necessarily need more offensive weapons, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t stockpile pass-catching threats for Matthew Stafford as they make a Super Bowl push in 2025.
The team always has Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, Tyler Higbee, Kyren Williams, Tutu Atwell and rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson. That’s a solid stable of weapons, but why not add another?
That’s exactly what Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton boldly predicted. He wrote that the Rams will sign veteran free-agent wideout Amari Cooper this offseason to “maximize Matthew Stafford’s late career years with an established group of wide receivers.”
At 31, coming off a down year, Amari Cooper isn’t going to break the bank in his first offseason as a free agent. As a perennial postseason contender, the Rams could appeal to the five-time Pro Bowler who may want a chance to play in the Super Bowl at this stage in his career.
In Los Angeles, Cooper would join a playoff-caliber team that has a well-respected quarterback under center. Nacua, Adams and Cooper would be one of the league’s top receiver trios.
Cooper is coming off his worst season in the NFL after only catching 44 receptions for 547 yards and four touchdowns. He played six games with the Cleveland Browns to open the year before being traded to and playing eight games for the Buffalo Bills. The change of scenery and a better quarterback didn’t help Cooper, who put up almost identical numbers at either stop: 24-250-2 in Cleveland and 20-297-2 in Buffalo.
Again, Cooper would not be a big player in L.A. He’d be the third or fourth receiver on the depth chart and closer to the fifth or sixth true passing option for Stafford. However, he’d be another body who understands the NFL well enough to contribute when necessary. Cooper still had 14 receptions for first downs this past season despite his limited targets.
If the price is right, there’s no reason not to bring Cooper in. Remember how Odell Beckham Jr. played down the stretch for the Rams in 2021? OBJ had just 27 receptions for 305 yards in eight games, but five touchdowns. And in the postseason, Beckham Jr. tallied 288 yards and two scores on the way to L.A.’s Super Bowl.
Cooper might not be Beckham, but he’s a solid insurance plan for the offense and could be another quality contributor.
