Hundreds come out for Boat Night to celebrate before the race

Hundreds of people filled Port Huron’s downtown to celebrate on the last night of Boat Night Friday.

Tents lined Huron Avenue as residents bought drinks, played games and listened to music.

McMorran Plaza featured a performance by the local band Big Pappa and the Machine. Other performers included Blue Skye and Flip’n Nipsy.

The night marked the last day of celebration before the 101st Bayview Mackinac Race begins Saturday morning.

Matt Feher, a local resident who brought his family out for the night, said it was his favorite night of the week. He came prepared for the rain that started to disrupt the event around 8 p.m., having tents and covers for his family as they cooked burgers.

Port Huron Police warned visitors in a statement on Facebook to limit drinking to the downtown area where the road had been closed off, and to not bring their own drinks. Boat Week has so far gone without any issues, the statement said, with the only reports being fender benders and slow traffic.

Saturday’s race to Mackinac Island begins Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m.
