The 3-way stoplight at the downtown intersection of Kirkwood and College avenues in Bloomington has not been working for a week.
A hidden underground electrical issue is the heart of the problem.
City officials hope the stoplight at the busy corner will be back up and working soon. Until then, stop signs placed in the intersection require drivers in each direction to stop before proceeding.
“It is an underground electrical issue that has not yet been precisely located,” city spokeswoman Desiree DeMolina said the morning of July 3.
“Rather than immediately trenching from College Avenue to the alley west of the intersection, which would have caused significant disruption to businesses and traffic, we opted to bring in specialized services to help pinpoint the fault,” she said in a written response to an inquiry about the nonworking stoplight
She said the city’s intent “is to limit the size and impact of the necessary excavation.”
