ORRVILLE ‒ A 54-year-old Wooster man was charged with felonious assault and improper discharging of a firearm after a shooting inside the Aultman Orrville Hospital emergency department, city police said.
Authorities were sent to the facility at 10:04 p.m. July 2 after a report about suspected narcotics found on a patient. While entering the hospital, an officer heard a single gunshot come from an evaluation room in the emergency department, police said.

Two minutes after entering the facility, the suspect was taken into custody without incident, police said. No injuries were reported.
A news release from Orrville police didn’t state what led to the weapon being fired.
“At Aultman Orrville Hospital, a firearm was brought into the hospital and discharged in the emergency department tonight,” the Aultman hospital system posted on social media following the shooting. “The Orrville Police Department along with Aultman security responded immediately and the incident is resolved. Fortunately, no one was injured. The safety and security of our patients and colleagues is our priority.”
The case remains under investigation and has been referred to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
“We commend the swift and professional actions of Orrville police officers, hospital staff and assisting personnel from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office,” Police Chief Cory Seiler said in a prepared statement. “Their coordinated response helped ensure the safety and security of individuals present.”
The shooting comes about a week after a man in mental distress wrested a gun from a security officer at Aultman Hospital in Canton and shot a patient care technician in the abdomen. The 35-year-old man is charged with three counts of felonious assault and a single count of robbery.
