Only one player in the NFL has a larger cap hit than Matthew Stafford in 2025

The Los Angeles Rams adjusted Matthew Stafford’s contract this offseason after the veteran quarterback was left with minicamp guaranteed money on his previous deal. Under his new contract, Stafford is signed through 2026 and can earn up to $84 million with $80 million total guaranteed.

It was a nice raise from what he was set to make, raising his cash payout for 2025 from $27 million to $44 million, while also lowering his cap hit from $49.67 million to $47.47 million. Even after reducing his cap hit for the upcoming season, Stafford’s number is still one of the highest in the NFL.

According to Spotrac, there’s only one player with a larger cap hit than Stafford this year: Dak Prescott at $50.5 million. Here’s a breakdown of the biggest cap hits in 2025 from Warren Sharp.

In 2026, assuming Stafford plays and doesn’t have his deal adjusted again, his cap hit will rise to $48.27 million. However, that won’t rank close to the league’s highest cap numbers.

He will rank 12th overall, so there will be far more expensive players in the league next year. As of now, his $42 million average annual value is 16th among all quarterbacks, so he’s not close to being the most expensive player at his position, either.

His new contract is a terrific value for the Rams, while also giving Stafford a raise at the age of 37.
