NFL analyst wildly suggests New York Giants cut QB Russell Wilson

After the New York Giants traded back into the first round of the 2025 NFL draft to select Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, head coach Brian Daboll was adamant that veteran free agent acquisition, Russell Wilson, will be the starter when the season starts in the fall.

However, recently, there have been rumors that the Giants have not closed the door on Dart earning the starting role.

Former NFL player and FOX Sports analyst Mark Schlereth was on the air this week and made a ridiculous suggestion for the Giants and their quarterback position.

“The Giants should cut Russell Wilson and start Jaxson Dart,” Schlereth said. “I’ll take this from the perspective of what went down in Denver just a year ago. In Denver, they had Russell Wilson. They moved on from Russell Wilson. Russell, he has a propensity to take way too many sacks, not throw the ball in the middle of the football field (and) all these different things.

“They draft a rookie quarterback, and everybody said, ‘Oh, the roster is not very good. The roster is the 31st-ranked roster in all of football. Oh, it’s a quarterback who, yeah, he may be smart, but he lacks a big-time arm talent and lacks the athleticism, or can’t feel all these different things.’ And the bottom line, there was a struggle for three or four games.

“He wasn’t great right out of the gate, but then he became the second-highest touchdown quarterback as a rookie next to Justin Herbert. He threw 29 touchdowns last year. Almost threw for 4,000 yards last year.”

Needless to say, Schlereth feels the Giants should take the Bo Nix route.

“You start your rookie and you go with the growing pains and you understand that you’re not going to the playoffs right now,” he said. “You do have a great defense, which is one of the best things you can give a young quarterback is a great defense. I think it’s just time to rip off the Band-Aid and say, ‘Jaxson Dart, you’re our guy.'”

The crazy part of Schlereth’s take is not necessarily suggesting the Giants start Dart in Week 1, it’s the suggestion they cut Wilson.

It’s entirely possible Dart starts sooner rather than later, especially given the Giants’ difficult schedule, but they will intend on rolling with Wilson early. If he succeeds, he’ll remain under center. If he struggles, then who knows?
