Gov. Braun announces in-state tuition freeze for Indiana's public colleges and universities

In-state undergraduate tuition at all of Indiana’s public colleges and universities will remain the same for the next two academic years, Gov. Mike Braun’s office announced.

“A month ago, we challenged our state’s public higher education institutions to find efficiencies, eliminate redundancies and identify ways to streamline services without compromising quality,” Braun said in a June 24 news release.

In May, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education recommended its first tuition freeze. The board is required by state law to set suggested tuition for the state’s colleges every two years, and any school seeking to charge more than the recommended amount must argue its case.

“Nearly all” of the state’s agencies and colleges had their budgets cut by 5% in the final days of this year’s budget session, according to the May news release.

“Out of all state entities, our higher education institutions are in the best financial position to weather these cuts, as state funding represents just one of the revenue streams — and institutions hold strong financial reserves,” Braun said.

It’s the first time that more than two of Indiana’s public universities have held tuition flat since 2010, according to the governor’s office. Schools typically increase tuition by a small amount each year.

The tuition freeze, in effect for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 academic years, includes both main colleges and their regional campuses.
