It’s time to take a look at the standout high school performers from the Akron area for last week.
Your vote will determine who will be the Akron-Area High School Athlete of the Week for Feb. 24-March 2. We will pick one girl and one boy. Each athlete’s credentials are listed above the poll — which will be live until 5 p.m. Thursday. The winners will be announced Friday morning on BeaconJournal.com.
Now, let’s meet the candidates.
Here’s a look at the girls nominees, in alphabetical order:
Cecelia Gilliam, Nordonia wrestling
Runner-up at 135 pounds at the Mentor district to advance to the state tournament.
Anne Ruble, North wrestling
Runner-up at 235 pounds at the Mentor district to advance to the state tournament.
Mckenna Shane, Walsh Jesuit gymnastics
Won a state championship in the uneven parallel bars with a score of 9.525, tied for 10th on the floor exercise (9.350) and placed eighth in the all-around (37.050) at the state gymnastics tournament.
Leannah Swiger, Springfield wrestling
Placed third at 130 pounds at the Mentor district to advance to the state tournament.
Ari Tompkins, Mogadore basketball
Scored a team-high 13 points and had eight rebounds Saturday to lead Mogadore to a 45-27 win over Danbury in the Division VII, Region 25 final to help the Wildcats advance to their first state semifinal in program history.

Giovanni Cursio, Lake wrestling
Runner-up at 175 pounds at the Division I Perrysburg district to advance to the state tournament.
Brayton Feister, Hoban wrestling
Won a Division II Kenston district title at 215 pounds to remain undefeated in his high school career and advance to the state tournament.
Sam Greer, Hoban basketball
Finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds, six blocks and two assists Saturday to lead Hoban to a 63-44 win over Brush in the Division III, Northeast 1 district championship game.
Isaiah McCray, Buchtel basketball
Scored 22 points Saturday to lead Buchtel to a 54-44 win over Jefferson Area in the Division IV, Northeast 3 district final.
Jarreau Walker, Streetsboro wrestling
Won a Division II Kenston district title at 106 pounds to remain undefeated this season and advance to the state tournament.
