Letter to the editor: Government must control spending

We must consider the government the same as a household. There must be a responsible head of the household. One who is in charge, whether male or female, must make the hard decisions, that decide whether the team will be successful or fail.

We must know the income of that household so we can make a budget. That is the first thing any economist will tell you.

We are $32 trillion to $33 trillion in debt right now and growing. The interest on that debt is choking us. The household must make some hard decisions or go completely away. We don’t want the country or our way of life or our government to dissolve. I shudder to think of alternatives. As a household we must make severe cuts to survive.

The elected officials have made many mistakes in the past that have grown into entities that cannot be fed enough and want more every year. For instance, the Energy Department was created in response to the crisis when OPEC reduced the oil allotment, beginning with six personnel. I believe I read some time ago that this department now has 173,000 employees, even though we can be energy efficient at the present time. Why do we need that many people? Most of our departments today have similar stories.

The Republic of The United States can not afford to continue in this manner or we will have no soul to lose.

Severe cuts must be made to survive. Why should we pay more for the defense of Europe than they are paying to protect themselves? Tariffs: why should we have to pay tariffs on incoming goods and not charge tariffs on our exports?

Tearing down the IRS? Surely you jest. And yes, the liberal left is trying to scare the public by spreading false information about Medicare, social security and other social services being cut.

Socrates once said, “A country quickly falls apart when the government finds it can give itself a raise.” That is what has been happening for many years in our government and must be stopped before we lose our soul and fade into history!

Government IS like a corporation or private business. If they fail to control unnecessary spending and expenses, they will soon have to file for bankruptcy and cease to exist.

In conclusion, while the recent article offers valuable insights, it is imperative to address the facts. We can no longer afford the bureaucracy that has been building for years. In the last paragraph of a recent article, the writer mentions resisting by all means necessary. Does that include burning buildings, cars and attacking other individuals for their religious or political beliefs? – Gerald Cross, Amarillo
