Texas A&M’s spring football season isn’t centered around redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed. Still, from a national media perspective, the Aggies aren’t receiving the usual attention due to last season’s 1-4 finish, which included Reed struggling in the pocket during the regular-season finale loss to rival Texas.
Still, this was his first season of extended play, given Conner Weigman’s injury issues and general struggles. While some fans wanted to blame Reed, he was at the bottom of Texas A&M’s issues, especially after running back Le’Veon Moss endured his season-ending knee injury.
This offseason, the running back room is the deepest it’s been in years. At the same time, the acquisition of wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver joins Terry Bussey, Izaiah Williams, and Ashton Bethel-Roman to fill out a much faster wide receiver room. With nearly every 2024 starter returning to the offensive line, Reed has no reason to improve substantially as a passer.
Earlier this spring, sophomore running back Rueben Owens stated that Reed has been “throwing good,” and if he begins to throw with more confidence, the sky is the limit. During Thursday’s seventh practice this spring, Marcel Reed was mic’d up, and if we’re talking about the need to show more confidence, this is a great example.

Reed is having fun (as he should) during spring practice. In addition to gaining healthy weight to fill out his frame, he is working on his footwork and downfield vision. These reps are extremely valuable leading into the fall, when the real work begins.
