Partisan elections kick off this month with a primary on Aug. 11 ahead of the general election in November.
There are a couple of local races for some voters and there are statewide races for all voters, most notably to see who will replace Gov. Tony Evers, who is retiring. There are both Democratic and Republican primaries in that race.

The winners in the Aug. 11 primaries will advance to the Nov. 3 general election.
This is a partisan primary, meaning you can only vote for one party’s candidates. If you choose a Democrat in one race and then a Republican in a different race, your ballot will not be counted.

Here is a rundown of the primaries in the Appleton area and links to coverage.
CONGRESS
6th Congressional District
Democrats: Amanda Bell and Brad Smith
Two Independent candidates, Mike Thurow and Elizabeth Fitzgibbon, and one Green Party candidate, Matthew Arndt, will also appear on the general election ballots. But only Bell and Smith are facing off on Aug. 11.
The winner of the Democratic primary will also be on the Nov. 3 ballot to take on Republican Rep. Glenn Grothman.
8th Congressional District
Democrats: Rick Crosson, Katrina deVille, Mark Scheffler.
The winner will face incumbent U.S. Rep. Tony Wied, R-De Pere.
STATE LEGISLATURE
1st Senate District
Republicans: Katie Baney, Barbara Bittner, Nic Cravillion, Jacob VanenPlas
The winner will face independent Mark Becker.
56th Assembly District
Democrats: Grace Abitz and Shawna Riley
Incumbent Dave Murphy didn’t seek reelection. The winner will face Republican Anthony Phillips on Nov. 3
STATE RACES
Governor
Gov. Tony Evers did not seek reelection.
Lieutenant governor
Secretary of state
Current Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski is running for lieutenant governor.
State treasurer
