David Crowley has won the Democratic primary for Wisconsin governor, a stunning turnaround for the Milwaukee County Executive in defeating Francesca Hong, who had been labeled the frontrunner heading into the Aug. 11 election.
A month ago, Crowley had ended his campaign. But just over a week later, amid a chaotic Democratic primary, the Milwaukee County Executive returned to the race and got a boost with the endorsement of Gov. Tony Evers.
His momentum carried him to an election victory.
Crowley will now face Republican Tom Tiffany in the general election Nov. 3. Tiffany, a Donald Trump-backed candidate, faced a challenger but easily won all 72 counties.
How did Crowley do it?
The 40-year-old won 53 of the Wisconsn’s 72 counties. Hong won 19 counties. Five other Democrats – though three of them had dropped out of the race – were also on the ballot, and some received a significant number of votes.
