With the start of a new school year just around the corner, organizations across St. Clair County are helping families stock up on supplies and other essentials.
Several free back-to-school events are planned throughout August, offering everything from backpacks and clothing to shoes, hygiene products and haircuts. Some events also include food, games and other family activities.
Here’s a look at back-to-school giveaways and events happening across St. Clair County.
Back to School Kind Soles & Hygiene Giveaway
Kind Human 4 Human Kind will distribute free shoes and hygiene products, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, body wash and feminine hygiene products. Shoe sizes will range from toddler through adult size 15.5, and children must be present to receive shoes. No registration is required, and all items will be available while supplies last.
End of Summer Back to School Block Party
The Port Huron Housing Commission will host a back-to-school block party featuring free haircuts for school-age children, a backpack giveaway, free lunch, games, raffle prizes and community resource tables. The event will also include the Port Huron Police Department’s mobile gaming unit and first responder vehicles. Haircuts require children to be accompanied by an adult, and backpacks will be available while supplies last.
Back-2-School Bash
Frankie Mae Care Center’s Back-2-School Bash will feature a backpack giveaway, games, raffles, music, food, vendors and prizes. Families must register children in advance to receive a backpack. The event is open to families and students of all ages.
Detroit Highwaymen Backpack Drive
The Detroit Highwaymen Gratiot Crew will host a community backpack giveaway for local children, with backpacks available while supplies last. The event will also feature free boys’ haircuts by Rocco’s Barbershop, fingernail painting by Nails by Sandra Liddle, finger foods and other kid-friendly activities.
2nd Annual Back-to-School Free Boys Haircut Event
The back-to-school event will offer free barbershop-style haircuts for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as free new and gently used clothing for students from elementary through high school. The haircut service is open to any student seeking a short, traditional barbershop-style haircut, regardless of gender. The event will also include a bounce house, face painting, a photo area and free cookies. Haircuts are first come, first served, and clothing, treats and other activities will be available while supplies last.
Families planning to attend are encouraged to arrive early, as many of the giveaways are available only while supplies last. Some events may also have registration or other requirements, so families should check the details before attending.
For those looking to help, several of the organizations are also accepting donations to support their back-to-school efforts. Information about donating can be found through the individual event pages and organizers.
