The dose of winter weather forecast for this weekend is too harsh for even Winterfest on Broadway.
On Broadway Inc. has canceled the annual outdoor celebration scheduled for Jan. 24 in the Broadway District of Green Bay due to the bitter cold.
The National Weather Service Green Bay issued an extreme cold watch from midnight Jan. 23 to noon Jan. 24 for “dangerously” low wind chills of minus 30 to minus 40. The forecast high for Jan. 24 is 2.
“The decision was made in the interest of all those involved in the event, including the animals, and those who would be attending and making memories with us,” according to a news release issued Jan. 20.
The event was scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include winter ax throwing, snow bowling, llamas, live music, horse-drawn carriage rides, ice carvings, a scavenger hunt, winter-themed market, children’s coloring area and other activities.
“The safety of everyone involved – participants, staff, and attendees – is our top priority,” Mary Rhode, vice president of marketing and communications for On Broadway Inc., said in a statement. “Our goal is to deliver a high-quality experience for guests while also ensuring positive outcomes for our vendors, retailers, food trucks, and Broadway District businesses. When extreme cold and dangerous wind chills begin to interfere with programming, it becomes necessary to make difficult decisions like this.”
