Green Bay's high on Jan. 23 might not climb above zero as brutal cold hits

Expect more bitter cold late for the Green Bay area starting Jan. 22, when the area will see lows in the minus double digits with wind chills even colder, and the high on one day won’t even make it above zero.

The National Weather Service Green Bay issued an extreme cold watch from midnight Jan. 23 to noon Jan. 24 for “dangerously” low wind chills of minus 30 to minus 40.

It starts to get colder Jan. 22 overnight. Temperatures will fall to minus 10 to minus 15.

The coldest forecast this week starts Jan. 23 with a high of minus 5 during the day, but there are indications it could get even lower, said Kira Jesse, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Green Bay.

“We could be looking at setting record low maximum temperatures, meaning the coldest the high temperature has been on that day,” Jesse said.

In January, the record lowest maximum temperature in Green Bay was set on Jan. 18, 1994, at minus 18, according to NWS Green Bay data.

It will feel even chillier, with the morning wind chill will be around minus 30 to minus 48 throughout Jan. 23 and Jan. 24.

It doesn’t appear that it will warm up over the weekend, with a high of 2 on Jan. 24 and 9 on Jan. 25.

People should bring pets indoors, limit their own time outside, and cover any exposed skin. The National Weather Service warns that frostbite could develop in as little as 10 minutes.

While the cold may be below the average, it’s not uncommon for Green Bay in January.

“It’s definitely below the normal but this is not uncommon,” Jesse said. “Most winters, we see a cold spell like this and it’s certainly been much colder before.”

Candlelit hikes, Winterfest on Broadway canceled

The frigid forecast has led to the cancellation of the candlelit hikes scheduled for the evenings of Jan. 23 and 24 at Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve in Suamico. You still have two opportunities to get in your hikes on Feb. 13 and 14.

On Broadway, Inc. also canceled Winterfest on Broadway and the Candy Land Scavenger Hunt Jan. 24 because of the extreme cold.
