Exactly one year ago, José Quintana, then with the New York Mets, took the mound in the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Milwaukee Brewers hope his outing on Friday, Oct. 17, in Game 4 of the 2025 NLCS against the same Dodgers goes much better than that start.
Quintana allowed five runs and walked four in 3 ⅓ innings in an eventual 10-2 loss to the Dodgers in a Game 4. He also gave up a home run to Shohei Ohtani, who will be his counterpart at Dodger Stadium.
However, the Mets weren’t facing elimination in that game last year. The Brewers are as they face an 0-3 series hole.
Here’s more on the pitching matchup for Brewers vs. Dodgers in Game 4:
Brewers vs Dodgers pitchers: Probable pitchers NLCS Game 4
José Quintana (11-7, 24 games, 3.96 ERA 1.29 WHIP) starts for the Brewers while Shohei Ohtani (1-1, 14 games, 2.87 ERA, 1.04 WHIP) gets the ball for the Dodgers.
Who’s pitching for the Brewers tonight?
José Quintana will make his first start in the playoffs for the Brewers.
And it’s in a must-win situation.
It’s been over a week since Quintana last pitched. He pitched three innings in relief in Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the Chicago Cubs on Oct. 8, a 4-3 loss for the Brewers. Quintana didn’t allow a run in that game.
Quintana signed with the Brewers shortly before the season began as a free agent to provide depth to a staff that was hit with injuries. The 36-year-old veteran made his debut April 11 and won his first four decisions and he was solid throughout the year.
The injury bug caught him late in the year and he missed the final couple weeks of the regular season with a left calf strain.
Jose Quintana vs Dodgers in 2025
Quintana has a lot of experience against the Dodgers over his long career.
And in 2025, he saw the powerful lineup twice. Both games resulted in Brewers wins. He went six innings both games, allowing one run in the first game July 9 at home. He wasn’t as sharp the second time on the road, allowing four runs and two home runs in the next on July 20 in Los Angeles. The Brewers still won, 6-5.
Who’s pitching for the Dodgers tonight?
Shohei Ohtani, the dual-threat superstar, makes his second start for the Dodgers in the playoffs.
He delivered a quality start the last time he was on the mound. He went six innings and allowed three runs on three hits, struck out nine and walked just one on 89 pitches in a 5-3 Dodgers win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1 of the NL Division Series.
Ohtani pitched in 14 games for the Dodgers in 2025 as he eased his way back on the mound following offseason shoulder surgery.
The reigning NL MVP has been relatively quiet at the plate for the Dodgers in the postseason, but he’ll look to deliver a fourth straight brilliant starting pitching performance for L.A. against the Brewers and send his team to the World Series.
