The Wisconsin Badgers men’s hockey team will be skating for its first national title since 2006 when it faces the Denver Pioneers in the championship game of the NCAA Frozen Four on Saturday, April 11 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The Badgers earned the right to play in the championship game thanks to a 2-1 victory over North Dakota in a semifinal Thursday, April 9.
In their semifinal victory, the Badgers used a pair of first-period goals and some outstanding goaltending from freshman Daniel Hauser to send the Fighting Hawks packing for home.
The championship game Saturday will pit two teams that are former rivals from the old Western Collegiate Hockey Association who have two of the most storied histories in college hockey.
While the Badgers have six national titles, fourth-most all time, Denver has won a record 10 titles and will be seeking its third crown in the past five years.
In fact, the Frozen Four hosted the four schools with the most NCAA hockey titles. Michigan, which Denver beat in double overtime in its semifinal, has nine titles and North Dakota has eight.
