Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto has taken a leave of absence according to an email sent to city council members.
Ponto, who was re-elected to the position in April, sent a letter to Brookfield City Clerk Sara Bruckman on May 23 saying he couldn’t perform his duties as mayor “in good faith” due to personal issues. The letter reads that Ponto plans to be absent until he is able to determine if he can come back as mayor.
Alderman Mike Hollquist, who ran against Ponto, posted the letter to his Facebook page and said:
“I do not have any additional information, and certainly wish Mayor Ponto well.”
City Council President Gary Mahkorn plans to serve as interim-mayor in Ponto’s absence.
Mahkorn, Bruckman and city attorney Jenna Merten, did not respond for requests for comment.
