West Allis police shoot, kill 72-year-old accused of killing, shooting two neighbors

Police shot and killed a man who they believe shot at two people, killing one and injuring another, after a neighborhood dispute in West Allis Saturday evening.

At a news conference June 28, West Allis Police Chief Patrick Mitchell said officers received a 911 call at 4:39 p.m. reporting a shooting outside a residence on the 1400 block of South 91st Street.

Officers responded and were met with a man armed with a firearm. When he did not comply with officers’ orders to drop his weapon, several officers fired and killed the 72-year-old man.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the man had shot and killed a 71-year-old man prior to officers’ arrival. The death of the 71-year-old is being treated as a homicide, according to police.

Officers delivered aid to both men until the West Allis Fire Department arrived on scene. Both died on scene.

A second 71-year-old, female victim was also shot before officers arrived and was taken to a hospital for her injuries. Police were initially unable to determine if she was shot, but said she was struck by gunfire in a later update.

Mitchell said all victims lived on the block and knew each other.

Multiple law enforcement agencies reported to the scene. The Greenfield Police Department is leading the investigation, with the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team investigating the officer-involved shooting, as required by state law.

No officers were injured, and all six officers involved in the shooting have been put on administrative leave, per the department’s protocol.

The West Allis neighborhood is a place where families live, kids play outside and houses are close together. Mitchell described it as a quiet neighborhood. People were gathered on nearby sidewalks and families were sitting on porches on the warm summer evening.

Mitchell said in response to the multiple officer-involved shootings this summer: “It’s senseless actions. It’s just insane to see this keep happening.”
