We Energies explains the cause of early morning loud bangs that echoed through downtown Milwaukee

A series of loud bangs echoed through downtown Milwaukee about 2:30 a.m. Thursday, June 26. The cause: steam release at a We Energies plant in the Menomonee Valley on Canal Street.

We Energies spokesperson Brendan Conway said the company believes a valve leaked during maintenance on the steam system, causing pressure to build up and release, causing the noises.

“We have isolated the issue and do not expect it to happen again,” Conway said in a statement. “This steam release did not impact the system, which is working properly.”

This natural gas-powered plant provides electrical and steam power to the downtown Milwaukee heating system. It includes two steam units and provides energy to 450 customers in the city.
