Wauwatosa's live painting tournament, Art 64, returns this weekend

The nation’s largest bracket-style live painting tournament returns to the streets of the Wauwatosa Village this weekend with an opportunity for visitors to screen print limited-edition designs from a beloved Milwaukee streetwear brand.

Art 64 will take place on Friday, June 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Hardwood Avenue, State Street and Underwood Avenue.

Now in its fifth year, both days of the tournament will feature a live screen-printing pop-up by Milwaukee street artist Brema Brema’s brand Unfinished Legacy.

What is the Wauwatosa Village’s Art 64?

The Art 64 tournament works like a bracket competition for painters. This year, 64 participants were selected from a pool of 236, representing 30 states and three countries, according to a news release from Discover Wauwatosa.

Over the course of two days, participants will compete for the $20,000 grand prize.

During the tournament, artists will go through three rounds and create three separate pieces.

Each artist is given a set period of time to paint a piece: 60 minutes in round one, 75 minutes in round two, and 90 minutes in the final round. Artists choose their own theme or subject of each round.

Spectators, both in-person and virtually, will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite artists to advance to the next round.

All paintings created during the event will be available for sale. According to Discover Wauwatosa, the event is expected to put more than $70,000 directly into the art community through prizes and sales.

Food and music entertainment will be available while the tournament is happening, as well as a dedicated North Shore Bank-sponsored kids’ area.

Unfinished Legacy pop-up offers another way for Art 64 spectators to take art home

For those who want to take home a piece of art to wear, Unfinished Legacy has them covered. The Milwaukee streetwear brand will be on site to screen print exclusive designs on t-shirts and other apparel.

Unfinished Legacy founder Brema Brema began his brand shortly after moving to Milwaukee in 2010 while attending Riverside University High School, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel previously reported. The brand skyrocketed to success during the COVID pandemic and has been featured in Vogue and Levi’s.

Now, he uses his brand to promote community and culture through a mission statement that streetwear is meant for those still writing their stories, according to the website. The brand has a storefront at 201 N. Water Street in Milwaukee’s Third Ward that offers events, and artistic experiences.

At Art 64, Unfinished Legacy will offer two limited-edition designs for screen printing, and both are exclusive to the event. One of the designs features a postal stamp from “Wauwatosa” and the other features a paint bottle with “ART” written on the bottle, spraying the numbers 64, an homage to the event.

Blank t-shirts and apparel will be available for purchase on site, or attendees can bring their own apparel to print on.
