Brewers minor leaguer Garrett Spain invoked some Matrix-like maneuvers to avoid a tag at home plate and score a run for the Class AA Biloxi Shuckers on July 18, part of a 4-2 win over the host Montgomery Biscuits.
Spain looked like a dead duck in the ninth inning when he tried to tag and score on a fly ball by Cooper Pratt in the ninth to shallow right. The throw from Colton Ledbetter was on the money, and Spain had to get creative to elude catcher Tatem Levins. So that’s what he did.
Spain avoided the first tag to his right, then slipped back to his left before diving and touching the plate.
The 5-9, 24-year-old outfielder Spain has a .605 OPS for the Shuckers this year, with five stolen bases. He’s a newcomer to the organization, acquired in the minor-league phase of the Rule 5 draft last offseason from the Toronto Blue Jays. He’s also played 11 games this season in Nashville for the Brewers’ Class AAA squad.
