MADISON – The first weekend in December will once again determine bragging rights in the state’s most anticipated men’s basketball rivalry.
Wisconsin vs. Marquette is set for Dec. 6 at the Kohl Center, the schools announced June 20. The tip-off time and broadcast information will be announced later.
This will mark the fifth straight season the Badgers and Golden Eagles play on the first weekend of December if you count the rivals’ Friday night battle in 2020.
The Badgers lost last year’s matchup, 88-74, at Fiserv Forum but have won four of the last six meetings. That includes a run of three straight wins at home.
News of the matchup is the latest piece of the puzzle to Wisconsin’s non-conference schedule.
The Badgers will spend Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 27-28) in San Diego at the Rady Children’s Invitational. The pairings for that tournament have not been announced, but Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported last week that UW will play Providence in the first game. On the other side of the bracket will be TCU and defending national champion Florida.
In May, Rothstein reported that UW and Villanova were close to finalizing a deal that would call for a matchup at Fiserv Forum on Dec. 19.
Also, the Badgers announced a non-conference matchup with BYU in Salt Lake City on Nov. 21 and a preseason exhibition versus Oklahoma at Fiserv Forum on Oct. 24.
The Big Ten schedule will be announced later this summer, but the league already has revealed each team’s home, away and two-play opponents.
Here is how it looks for the Badgers.
Home: Iowa, Maryland, Michigan State, Northwestern, Rutgers, UCLA and USC.
Road: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, Penn State and Washington.
Home and road: Minnesota, Ohio State and Purdue.
