SHEBOYGAN – A 19-year-old Sheboygan man was arrested Aug. 23 after police said he fled a traffic stop and later crashed into another vehicle at North 14th Street and Superior Avenue.
Police say driver fled traffic stop
Sheboygan police officers attempted to stop the vehicle about 5:40 p.m. near South Eighth Street and Indiana Avenue because of excessive engine noise and other driving behavior, according to the department.
The vehicle did not stop and accelerated to a high speed while traveling north on South 14th Street from Indiana Avenue, police said.
Officers pursued the vehicle for several blocks but ended the pursuit near North 14th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue because of the driver’s dangerous behavior and speed, police said. The vehicle continued north on North 14th Street.
Crash happened at North 14th Street and Superior Avenue
Moments later, another officer responding to the area saw the vehicle as it approached North 14th Street and Superior Avenue. That officer did not pursue the vehicle, police said.
The vehicle entered the intersection at high speed, ran a red light and struck a vehicle traveling east on Superior Avenue, police said.
Two people were taken to hospitals
The 19-year-old, who was the only person in his vehicle, was arrested at the scene. He was taken by Sheboygan Fire Department ambulance to an area hospital, evaluated and then booked into the Sheboygan County Detention Center on multiple charges. His name was not released.
Police said he had no apparent injuries.
The other driver, a 73-year-old Sheboygan man, was taken by Sheboygan Fire Department ambulance to an area hospital with minor injuries. He was the only person in his vehicle.
Intersection was closed briefly
The intersection of North 14th Street and Superior Avenue was closed for a short time after the crash but has since reopened.
