St. Mary's North Building is being demolished as part of $270M project

The North Building on the campus of Hospital Sisters Health System St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay is being demolished to make way for a six-story tower.

The new tower will house over 100 patient rooms, including an expanded intensive care unit with 36 beds, as well as two cardiovascular operating rooms and a cardiac procedural room.

The 108-foot-tall tower was built in 1958 and was used as clinic and administrative space for the hospital campus. The new tower will also have two new cardiovascular operating rooms and a cardiac procedure room.

“We recognize the history held within these walls, and now our mission requires us to look forward at the needs of our community,” said Bob Erickson, president and CEO of HSHS Wisconsin, in a news release.

The $270 million expansion of St. Mary’s and St. Vincent hospitals in Green Bay was announced in March 2025, though details of St. Vincent’s remodel have not been announced. Work at St. Mary’s campus began with demolition of the former Crossroads Care Center, 1760 Shawano Ave., to to incorporate the site onto the hospital campus.

HSHS said the inside of the North Building has been dismantled “piece by piece” over recent months to prepare for demolition, while the main hospital has remained open. Additional parking, new security features, a new main entrance, and new kitchen and dining area are also under construction.

Medical equipment and furnishings from the empty North Building on the hospital campus were donated to the Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity and Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach, which distributes medical supplies to areas in need of medical support around the world.

HSHS said groundbreaking for the new patient tower will be at the end of the summer or in the fall and the entire hospital expansion project is expected to be done in 2028. Services at St. Mary’s will still be available during construction.
