An abandoned Milwaukee church caught fire early Wednesday, June 17, on the city’s northwest side.
The fire broke out around 6:06 a.m. at the former Resurrection Lutheran Church, 2602 W. Auer Ave, Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski said. Firefighters were on scene until about 7 a.m., police at the scene said. The fire was extinguished but the scene remained cordoned off when a reporter arrived at the building around 8:15 a.m.
One firefighter fell through some stairs and was injured when trying to enter the basement of the old church. The firefighter was transported by the paramedic unit to Froedtert Hospital, Lipski said. He was then treated and released from the hospital.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Lipski said the flames were contained to the church, and did not impact any nearby buildings.
The church has been vacant for at least three years. The property, which includes the church and a parsonage in the Franklin Heights neighborhood, is owned by the city. It’s listed for sale for $32,100.
