SHEBOYGAN – First Congregational Church will host an exhibit showcasing quilts that have welcomed migrant children crossing the southern border.

The showcase was created in partnership with Casa Alitas Welcome Center in Tucson, Arizona, and the Tucson Historical Museum.

The church, 310 Bluff Ave., will unveil the exhibit May 18 beginning with a worship service at 10 a.m., followed by an open house from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with refreshments from Arepa House.

What’s included in the exhibit?

Included among the quilts is one that features squares designed by the migrant children themselves of something they love.

Another is a “Ballerina Quilt” — the prototype of the first quilts made for the children arriving at Casa Alitas.

The quilts will be on display until June 1, with separate viewings available by contacting FCC by email to office@fccsheboygan.org.

Also at the May 18 event …

Attendees May 18 can create their own quilt squares and participate in activities like weaving and music. Adults and children will be invited to create a square that will be used in future welcome quilts.

Creative activities will also include weaving and playing music for all ages to express a desire to include and welcome migrants from other countries.
