MENASHA – Local businesses and residents are being warned about scam emails requesting wire transfers.
The Menasha Police Department is alerting community members about fraudulent invoices coming from scammers that appear to be sent from the city’s Community Development Department.
According to authorities, the scam emails, which include the city logo and references real Menasha addresses, request wire transfers for large sums of money.
The MPD said the scam emails use unofficial addresses like @usa.com but revealed that official City of Menasha emails will always have a domain ending in @menashawi.gov.
Police also advised that the city “will never request payment via wire transfer.”
“These invoices are designed to trick people into thinking they are dealing with the city,” wrote Network/Systems Administrator for the City of Menasha Andrea Oskey in a news release from MPD. “Before you pay anything, take a moment to verify the sender’s email address and payment instructions. If something looks off, stop and call us directly.”
