The local historical society received the 2025 Reuben Gold Thwaites from the Wisconsin Historical Society for its work in “preservation, public programming, education, and community outreach” the organization announced Tuesday.

It is the second time Portage County Historical Society has earned the trophy, named after a renowned former executive director of the state historical society who served in the role from 1887 until his death in 1913, according to a news release from the local historical society. Portage County Historical Society last received the trophy in 1996, according to the release.

“To receive this honor nearly 30 years after our first award speaks volumes about the continued growth and impact of our organization,” John Harry, Portage County Historical Society executive director said in the release. “From new exhibits and educational programs to community partnerships and preservation efforts, this award is a reflection of the hard work and passion of our staff, board, volunteers, and supporters.”

The organization credits its recent success to a strategic decision made in 2021 to bring on professional staff to manage operations instead of relying on volunteers, according to the release. Since making the decision, the organization has added multiple paid positions, expanded public programming, launched community initiatives, and revitalized several historic sites.

“Rhythms of the River” music history exhibit at Heritage Park, a live oral history series and events such as Heritage Days and Lagers and Loggers are among recent community outreach efforts the organization has made, according to the release.

A formal award presentation will take place during a ceremony later this summer, according to the release.
