A 54-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle on Milwaukee’s Historic Mitchell Street Monday, July 27.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the pedestrian as Sherry May Long, of Milwaukee.
The crash occurred around 11:35 p.m., on the 1100 block of West Historic Mitchell Street, according to Milwaukee police. A vehicle was headed westbound when it hit the woman, who was in the street.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation, which is ongoing.
Milwaukee police previously said the pedestrian was 73 years old, but later confirmed she was 54.
It’s at least Milwaukee’s fifth fatal pedestrian crash this month.
Overnight July 7, Troy Lewek, 47, of Milwaukee, died after two cars struck him then fled the scene. In a separate incident that night, 45-year-old James Spears died after being hit by a box truck on Interstate 43.
On July 12, two women, 48-year-old May Daiber and 49-year-old Amy Austin, were fatally struck by two racing vehicles, according to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office.
On July 15, 70-year-old William Spears was fatally hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road in his wheelchair.
As of July 26, Milwaukee has had 25 fatal traffic crashes so far in 2026, according to Milwaukee Police Department data.
