Packers training camp preview: Morgan, movement and newcomers highlight OL

The Green Bay Packers open training camp on Wednesday, July 23, marking the unofficial start of the 2025 season for Matt LaFleur’s team. After back-to-back playoff appearances but disappointing playoff failures, the Packers are hoping to take another step forward in 2025. The process begins in full on July 23.

Packers Wire will go position by position previewing the roster, highlighting battles to watch, the things that actually matter and young players to monitor this summer.

Here is our training camp preview of the offensive line group:

On the roster (16)

Most important: Who plays left tackle?

One of the biggest position battles on the roster will play out at the premium position of left tackle, where multi-year starter Rasheed Walker will attempt to hold off 2024 first-round pick Jordan Morgan for the starting job in 2025. Walker has been consistently good as a pass protector but could stand to be a more complete and consistent player, especially entering a contract year. The Packers want Morgan on the field somewhere, and competing with Walker gives him a path to a starting job if he’s excellent on the edge this summer. With Aaron Banks starting at left guard and Elgton Jenkins moving to center, the next offensive line domino is likely at left tackle, and training camp will determine the winner If Walker keeps the job, Morgan could focus his efforts on competing with Sean Rhyan for a starting job at right guard. But first things first: the Packers need to decide who gives them the best chance to win games at left tackle. — Zach Kruse

What to watch: Who will be the swing tackle?

Not even Matt LaFleur is certain who his best five offensive linemen are heading into the season. The only two locked-in starters are Aaron Banks at left guard and Zach Tom at right tackle. Elgton Jenkins is penciled in at center, but the position switch has raised questions about his current contract. Things will get sorted out during training camp, but I am interested to see who emerges as the swing tackle. Jordan Morgan is an option if he can’t overtake Rasheed Walker at left tackle or win the right guard job. I also wouldn’t rule out rookie Anthony Belton, who started 33 games at tackle for NC State. Swing tackle is the sixth most important position on the offensive line, and the Packers’ depth gives them some flexibility. — Brandon Carwile

One thing that actually matters: Have offseason moves improved the interior?

The Packers made a commitment to beefing up the interior of the offensive line this spring, signing left guard Aaron Banks, moving Elgton Jenkins to center and drafting mammoth lineman Anthony Belton in the second round, who could potentially compete with Sean Rhyan at right guard. Brian Gutekunst has spoken about wanting the offense to control games more, and that could be achieved by becoming a more physical unit, especially on the interior. Green Bay had a below average run blocking group in 2024, making life harder than it needed to be for Josh Jacobs at times. If the interior of the offensive line is exerting its will on the defensive front in both phases this summer, it will bode well for their chances of being a more dominant unit overall. — Mark Oldacres

Young player to watch: Jordan Morgan

The Packers made waves in April when they selected Matthew Golden in the first round, marking the first time the Packers drafted a wide receiver in the first round in 23 years. The year prior, Brian Gutekunst drafted Jordan Morgan in the first round, marking the first time they selected an offensive lineman in the first round in 13 years. Smart money suggests that the Packers get Morgan into the starting lineup during his second year in the league. The question is, where will he wind up? He’ll battle Rasheed Walker for the right to start at left tackle and protect Jordan Love’s blindside. If he doesn’t start at left tackle, Morgan could unseat Sean Rhyan at right guard. With both Walker and Rhyan set to be free agents following the 2025-2026 season, it’s also possible that Morgan serves as the swing tackle/sixth OL during his second year in the league with an eye on making him the team’s long-term plan at left tackle during the Love Era. The battle at left tackle is one that I’ll be monitoring closely this summer. — Brennen Rupp
