Packers LB Quay Walker had offseason 'clean up' surgery on ankle

Green Bay Packers linebacker Quay Walker had surgery on his ankle this offseason and is still recovering to start training camp.

General manager Brian Gutekunst confirmed Wednesday that Walker needed a “clean up” procedure on the ankle, which was originally injured during the regular season. He missed three straight games to end the regular season but played through the injury during the Packers’ playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Gutekunst believed Walker needed another week or so before he would be ready to participate at training camp. The Packers placed Walker on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list last Friday, when previously injured players reported to camp.

Walker didn’t participate during the offseason workout program and was seen in an orthopedic walking boot during minicamp.

Gutekunst confirmed the Packers are still attempting to get an extension done with Walker, who had his fifth-year option declined by the team this offseason. The Packers general manager said the team wants Walker around “for a number of years,” so a long-term extension is possible at some point in training camp or into the regular season. Walker’s rookie deal is entering its final year in 2025.

Without Walker available to start camp on Wednesday, offseason addition Isaiah Simmons received first-team reps at linebacker next to Edgerrin Cooper and Isaiah McDuffie.

A player can come off the PUP list at any point during training camp.
