The Green Bay Packers introduced a first of its kind at the NFL level on Thursday: a hand-painted, leather replica helmet.
The team revealed a 1923-inspired throwback uniform set on Thursday, with the brown, painted helmet completing the look.
From the team: “The historic ensemble also features, for the first time in NFL history, a hand-painted helmet designed to emulate the vintage leather look of the NFL’s earliest helmets. The brown helmets feature realistic distressing and hand-decorated leather strap and stitching effects, with a navy face mask completing the look.”

A uniform from the 1920s wouldn’t be accurate without leather helmets, the standard headwear of the day. Previously, the Packers wore all brown helmets with throwback uniform sets from the same era. This time around, the Packers got the details right, turning an all-brown helmet into one that actually looks like a leather helmet.
Here’s how the helmet was painted:
The University of Illinois wore a faux leather helmet during a game last season, so this type of helmet does have proof of concept.
The Packers have not announced which game they will wear the throwback uniform set, but it will be a home game at Lambeau Field.
